Augmented Reality in everyday situations...the yard line on the screen to show the line of scrimmage on a football game.  Or it can be the information that your smart phone provides about your location and what businesses are around you.

Augmented Reality Apps for the Classroom:

Imagine this...

  • Children could have the opportunity to dissect an animal...virtually? Okay...so maybe not totally dissect  but how about an app that would allow the layers of muscle  tissue, and bone to become visible?  How awesome would that be.  Also, what about taking a photograph of a person's arm and having the app recognize the bones that would be found in that part of the body...I imagine this would be highly engaging for students.
  • Books could come to life?  Imagine if the stories that students read had live images on every page? With the use of augmented reality students could not only imagine the story, but they could see one person's rendition of that story.  This type of visual representation could really help with comprehension.
  • Students could explore the Louve Museum without ever leaving the classroom? Yes...it is true.  Students can log into this site and and tour the museum and get layers of information about the paintings, the building, and all of the history that it contains.
  • Students could use geotagging to plan a trip? What about that?  A teacher in my school does a trip with her math students where she gives them a budget and they have to plan a trip according to that budget.  What about changing that plan a bit and including Geotagging.  Students could use any Geotagging app and do their research that way rather than using the Internet for research.  Those who don't get out of town, perhaps could plan a night out on the town and be given a smaller budget.
  • Students could complete a scavenger hunt around the school to discover new things? There are so many possibilites to Layar, and this is just one of them...Imagine this at meet the teacher night.  As parents enter the classroom with their children, the teacher could give them an Ipad and give them instructions about the building tour.  As parents and students arrive at each location (library, office, lunch room...) there could be a photograph which links the parents to an activity or information about that location.  Students could also use Layar to create a report of sorts with a variety of pictures each with provides information to share.
  • Students could take a picture of the sky and identify constellations and other celestial bodies? Using Star Walk, students can take a picture of the night sky and immediately see information about the constellations found.  Names and history about the constellations are at the student's fingertips!
  • Students could create a scavenger hunt and or report using QR codes and a tablet? What if during a literary circle book unit each group was responsible for creating a bulletin board using QR codes.  With those codes the students could connect the viewers with information about the author, websites pertaining to the book, pictures that help to establish the setting, and so much more.  QR codes open up tons of possibilites for students in the classroom!
